40 Book Challenge 2016-2017
The 40 Book Challenge was inspired by a book called The Book Whisper by Donalyn Miller. The idea behind the challenge is to allow students to create a goal of reading 40 books over the school year and during the summer. What I love about the program is that there are no rewards or competitions, only that students are reading multiple genres of books in hopes of finding they love many different kinds of books. This year, I am not limiting the different types of books that students may read, but if they are up for the challenge, I do have a goal sheet I will give to students who would like to read multiple genres of books. I hope many of the students are up for that challenge! In this video, Donalyn Miller explains her purpose behind the 40 Book Challenge. I hope this gives you information about the challenge and answers any questions you may have. Also, the 40 Book Challenge is completely voluntarily. I don't want to pressure any child into feeling they have to read 40, but I do want them to try for 40 and see how they do! I think this will be a great way to promote reading at home and at school! I can't wait to see how many students can complete the challenge and see the pride in their faces at the end of the school year!
